Stress-Free Travel Tips for Savvy Travelers
Estimated Reading Time: 7 minutes
Whether you're a globetrotter or a frequent traveler to the other side of the county line, traveling is simply fun and therapeutic. It's often one of the greatest highlights of someone’s life. Whether you're with friends or family, taking pictures, journaling, or simply relaxing away from all the tech demands, traveling is, after all, human nature. Are you looking for tips to make traveling less of a mess and more enjoyable? Let's explore how you can save money, time, and get the most out of your traveling experience.
Saving Money While Traveling
Money is first on the list simply because, well, it’s what makes the world go round. However, one doesn’t need to have a lot of money to have fun and travel the globe. There are places in the state of Maryland that I still need to explore. It’s a beautiful state, but I prefer to talk about my home state of Michigan, where beaches stretch for miles and the water is fresh—not filled with dangerous sharks. I plan on writing a few blogs about Michigan and my time there come summer. If you would like to share your experiences abroad or locally, send me a message, and let me post some of your pictures—maybe you'll let me write about your experiences.
Book in Advance: One of the easiest ways to save money is by booking flights, hotels, and activities in advance. This often gives you access to early-bird deals and lower prices.
Why is booking in advance best practice? It has a lot to do with getting someone’s attention on the other side and saying, “I’m coming, and I need these things set up for me before I arrive.” It’s a simple gesture that prepares you and the host. Some people prefer not to organize their trip and make a mess instead. I would not recommend “winging it.”
Make it a practice to know your travel habits and book your flights, hotels, or even restaurant reservations weeks or months in advance. You'll find that life becomes so much simpler and accommodating. If you need to cancel, simply cancel your booking. Pre-booking tickets for popular attractions and tours can save you from waiting in long lines.
Travel During Off-Peak Seasons: Prices for flights and accommodations are generally lower during off-peak seasons. Plus, you'll avoid the crowds.
Traveling during the off-peak season means you won't have to rub shoulders with others while standing in ticket lines. Demand is low, and you will enjoy significant savings. Pay attention to special deals and promotions. During off-peak times, you'll find deals that aren't available during peak seasons.
For example, you could access discounted tour packages, reduced entry fees to attractions, and special dining offers. Airlines and hotels are also more affordable during off-peak seasons. Regarding accommodations, consider staying in guesthouses or vacation rentals instead of paying for expensive hotels.
Use Travel Rewards: Sign up for travel reward programs and credit cards that offer points or miles. These can be redeemed for flights, hotel stays, and other travel expenses.
I have always used AAA when checking into a hotel. Finding a hotel that accepts AAA is cost-effective—you'll save at least 10% on your hotel bill. Depending on the type of membership, you could be entitled to other great perks. I pay about $65.00 per year for my AAA membership, but it’s worth it because it directly cuts travel costs. You can sign up for free and still get a hotel room discount. Most airlines and hotels offer some sort of discount, but be mindful that you're not paying an exorbitant membership fee.
Saving Time While Traveling
Plan Your Itinerary: Having a well-thought-out itinerary can save you time and stress. Make a list of must-see attractions and plan your days accordingly.
There’s nothing wrong with creating a planner and sticking to it, but there will be moments when you deviate from the itinerary—that’s not a crime. Nevertheless, having a well-thought-out itinerary can save you time and reduce stress. Keep in mind that if you want to keep your travels organized, there are travel apps that can help with navigation, booking, language translation, and more.
Pack Light: Traveling with only a carry-on can save you time at the airport and make it easier to move around. Plus, it reduces the risk of losing your luggage.
We've all tried to pack oversized luggage with every article of clothing we own, but often this is the worst idea for traveling. My belief is simple for traveling, and it’s not for everyone: I like the notion of taking a minimalist approach to what you bring, yet bringing more back with you as you return from traveling. So pack light and worry less about watching your belongings as you enjoy your travels.
Getting the Most Out of Your Traveling Experience
Engage with Locals: One of the best ways to experience a new place is by talking to locals. They can provide insights and recommendations that you won't find in guidebooks.
I also like to research where I plan on visiting and maybe dress similarly—but not entirely. For example, don’t stick out like a sore thumb if you're in Europe wearing unseen-before style clothing that gives you away. Why not try to blend in a little and keep eyes off you as you look around as if you're lost already? Have fun and be safe with your surroundings. Engaging with locals can help you discover places that might not be on a travel app but still provide fun experiences that will outlast your entire trip.
Try New Things: Step out of your comfort zone and try new foods, activities, and experiences. This is what makes traveling exciting and memorable.
If you are traveling and sticking to a plan that's been recirculated on the web, my advice is to break away from this old pattern and create a new roadmap for your personal enjoyment. I tend to stay away from common attraction sites and enjoy paths that only a few have taken. This can be anything from exploring hidden gems in local neighborhoods, discovering off-the-beaten-path hiking trails, or indulging in unique culinary experiences at hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
Closing Thoughts
Let your travels bring enjoyment to your life, and remember: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Painfully Poor Performance. I like saying that because it’s true. If you can plan ahead, your footsteps are less likely to falter. Bring a camera if you enjoy capturing those breathtaking shots, and take time to write about your experiences so you can learn from mistakes or remember the faces with names you met along the way on your travels.
